Corners!!!

by Howser17 » 11 Feb 2008 23:13

Every game, we have so many corners, yet we very rarely do anything with them! Surely this should be something that the team should be working on during training. I don't know off the top of my head the ratio of goals scored from corners, however i do know it isn't great. A starting point would be to actually get the ball into the box, at premiership level, our guys should be placing that ball right into the box every time. This is an area of our game that if we improved, could be used to great advantage.

I agree it for some reason seems to be a tactic to play every corner near post...come on lads

Im starting to think if that is actually a tactic, or if we simply can't clear the first defender. There must be someone in the side that can consistantly hit the ball into the box, and with Kebe, we have another player with good height that may be able to capitalise on this.

I can't put my finger on the problem, but last season and the one before, Ingi & Sonks (and others) scored from corners and other set pieces. What's happened to our kick takers? What are the coaching staff doing about it? I know defenders are better in the Prem, but..............

If it was a tactic then you might think that we'd put a player somewhere near the front post occasionally. It's just consistantly crap corners of late.

When we get a corner im more worried about us conceeding on the break than scoring!

Fans always get excited when their team gets a corner. God knows why, i wonder how low the goals from corners ratio actually is? At a guess id say the average team gets 250 corners a season in the prem. Thats just over 6 per game. But rarely do you see more than a few goals a season from corners per team. Unless your Villa. Who have we got next?......oh

You make a very good point, we did score quite a few goals from corners.
I think Ingimarsson was much more aggressive last season, he would come running into the box from just outside, while this season everybody just stands about in a stationary position.
The clue to scoring on corners has to be movement to lose your marker, you have to stand a bit outside the box, move from side to side and then run forward into the box having lost your man.

Also the delivery on corners has been absolutely abysmal. It seems to always be too low (ankle height), near post keeper food, or even behind goal.
This has to change.

Maybe Matejovsky should be taking corners instead of the (inconsistent) Hunt?

Typically we are a small team - and especially this year. Trying to get anything from corners against defenders the size of those that Villa, Evertonb, Bolton, etc, etc have is pretty fruitless, regardless of the quality of the delivery.

With Cisse and Sonko in at Centre Back surely we should get more joy off corners?

Indeed - but Spurs have (had?) comedy defenders, regardless of the size of them.

Sidwell was good at making darting runs in the box to pull the defender out of position allowing someone to get a bit of space.

Yes I agree with the views on corners as we are not making them count. Our central defenders dont seem to be getting anything out of them although Hunt's delivery has been very poor with either his failure to get the ball over the first defender or as with Saturday hitting the ball straight out of play which was a total waste

We had eight corners on sat. I think Hunty took about 7 of them - even on the right hand side.

I just throw my hands up sometimes. One of these days something will fall for us...

Thats another thing, Hunt. He's been great for us, but his set piece delivery has never been amazing. Would rather Marek, or Shorey takes them.

Id go with shorey, maybe he could alternate with one of the right peggers depending which side the corner is coming from. Im praying for a goal from a corner against villa after this topic!
