Royal Lady Brentford away was the biggest single game in this club's history IMHO.

Had we lost, I believe we would not have been in the championship for years, let alone in the premiership and may have imploded had Madejski thrown in the towel.

Good shout

After the disappointment of the year before, I think you're spot on. We might never have recovered if we'd missed promotion that year. That game was absolutely massive for what it represented at the time

In terms of what sunday's game represents...absolutely sweet FA (no pun intended). We won't accomplish anything by reaching the semis. Sure, it will be an absolutely magical moment, and it will see us off to wembley, but in reality, it's not a make or break match. It doesn't have any real significance to it. If we lose, we lose, so be it. We move on. Brentford - if we'd lost that, there might have be no coming back.

I guess it really comes down to what you stand to lose, rather than what you stand to win, IMHO

blue_army1871 Is the game against Aston Villa the biggest in Reading's history?

Only if we win it.

I, personally, will never forget the Simod Cup Final.
The programme, ticket, and the picture of Hicksy holding the cup are framed on the wall, facing me now.
We went to the national stadium, for the first time ever, and came home with a trophy.

I was sat to the side of the pitch, and saw the end to my left filled with Reading fans. We probably had representation aroumd 2/3 of wembley.
Luton fans didn't turn up.
We looked like a big club.
That warmed the cockles of this man's heart.

We could be one, too.

Sun Tzu Simod Cup Final was way bigger IMHO.

This one is lowish on my personal list of 'big games'. It's nice to be here, but we're 3 games off winning anything and if we lose then in 2 weeks time no one will remember it.

The Simod was the first time we'd done anything of much significance, first final, first time at Wembley. It probably doesn;t seem much now but at the time it was probably the first awakening that made people realise the potential at the club.

I've always felt that the Simod Cup semi-final was a bigger game than the final (both at the time and looking back). As a few people have said, it was a bit of a Mickey Mouse competiion and as nice as it was to stuff Luton the real prize was the trip to Wembley for the first time in the club's history. I was so nervous during that penalty shoot out and high as a kite all the way home!

Reaching the final would be the biggest moment for me.

To get there, we must win a semi.

To get THERE we must win a quarter.

So, for me, Sunday's game is of massive importance.

And, win or lose, it makes no difference to the leauge other than the massive confidence boost versus the chance of an injury.

I wouldn't swap a win on Sunday for a win in our next league game, but if we get to the semi's in WILL be remembered a whole more than whatever happens in the leauge this year. As a club we need new fans by the year and this FA Cup run would have secured a decent influx already.

Is it me, or does the "biggest" or "most important" match of Reading's career occur every season at the moment?

This Sunday's game has to be one of the biggest if only because it has taken us 83 years to get this far. As for it being THE biggest game? The next game is ALWAYS the biggest game!

Possibly the away game at Brighton in 05/06 after we had lost at home to Plymouth. What would have happened had we lost that one? The home defeat to Fulham in 2007/08 proved to be enormous in the history of our club. Also Birmingham at home last season. As I see it, the Villa game IS the biggest game thus far this season. There will be bigger to follow, that's for sure!

Simod Cup was only big because we had done nothing in the previous 115 years. But if you think about it no decent side from prem (or div as it was then) entered and those who did fielded reserve sides except Coventry in semis.

It was a 5 year wonder and will never come back.

This isn't that big a game, because the impact to us if we lose it it next to nothing - and even if we win it then we've just got one step further in this competition, not actually won anything.

The biggest was probably our match at home to Fulham 2 years ago - so much depended on that one game, and we're still suffering the result of losing that one.

blue_army1871 Is the game against Aston Villa the biggest in Reading's history? Or at least since 1927. If not, what is..?

Size is unimportant

It's all about WNG

Jesus christ thats twice in a week i agree with you, in terms of how we have evolved as a club, and with hindsight, this was by far the biggest game.

I think you will find that Forest played their 'First Team', with Pearce, Webb etc. playing.

In terms of media attention it isa pretty big game, but in terms of importance to RFC it is not that big, certainly compared to other games in the last 10 years.

It is also pretty low in my list of big games and hence why I'm not going. I'd still happily swap any of our cup wins for 3 points.

M-U-R-T-Y Reading. vs Birmingham last game of 08/09 was bigger for me. Think how drastically different our situation might be right now?

+1

Also one of the most dissapointing too.

Although Fulham v Portsmouth in 08 was probably just as bad, even though we were not involved.

Still this season has been very very exciting.

I'm not saying I don't want us to win, just that for me the game against Wednesday was bigger and more important. However I'll be there at Wembley for the semi if we make it.........

Call me a romantic but if we have to lose against Derby to beat Villa I'd take it! The FA Cup is a massive competition and the media coverage, revenue and memories generated from a cup semi final or dare I say final will last a lifetime!

Will it? Millwall's final appearance has pretty much been forgotten, as has Wycombe's semi final appearance.........

Forgotten? Not by Millwall fans!!!

I don't care how the rest of the football world see us, I only care about my club and how much I enjoy it and it's attempts at progress. For me another trip to Wembley would be fantastic, even if it's just for a semi-final and not the real thing.

Oddly I find myself agree with Sun Tzu and Ian Royal that this is a big game in the history of the club, but not as big a deal as a cup final at Wembley where we won our first meaningful cup competition.

Very good point by RL about the Brentford game too. As an individual fixture it's no where near as important as an FA Cup Quarter-final, but put into context of where the club was and the consequencies of the result that game was just about as important as it gets.
