Terrible news, Fred was a wonderful servant to the club. Have witnessed first hand the effects of dementia on a close family member, ultimately a devastating illness. Will certainly donate to this.

Top, top bloke is Fred. Will be donating. EP always looked perfect.... except when he destroyed all the grass at the Town End right before the start of the season by applying weedkiller instead of miracle grow.....

I am sure the story was that he applied fertiliser but too concentrated?

I went on the stadium tour over the weekend.

The guy showing us round towards the end went into the west stand concourse.

Pointed to several posters up the wall but specifically showed us to the one honouring Gordon Neate. Made a big point of praising his work and dedication, and said he's not in the best of health.

There's really no need for that.

I remember reading on here that there was a game called off due to a waterlogged pitch, maybe the replay was also called off.. it might have been against Bournemouth or might not have been, anyway when the final replay happened the away fans presented Gordon with a pitch fork to help with drainage.

It wasBury IIRC, and it was abandoned with us getting the mighty runaround. Also IIRC we didn't really make a big show of trying to get the pitch playable hence the gesture from the visiting fans for the rearranged fixture.

Sad to hear the news about Gordon. He is a top man whom I met on many occasions. I remember seeing him make his debut and his retirement game and many great games in between, a career sadly cut all too short by injury. Not only was he a top groundsman - despite his one slip up! - but he was a true servant of RFC for many, many years, caring for the Elm Park turf basically singlehanded and only getting significant help when we moved to the MadStad. In addition, his wife used to take all the dirty kit home after each game and wash it.

Truly a great couple who deserve all the help that we and the club can give - after all that is what being a FAMILY club is all about
