Warnock fixed it for Huddersfield....

by dave0707 » 05 May 2023 08:05

I'm just wondering how much Colin W's past connections with Cardiff & Sheffield United influenced the results of those matches in Huddersfield's favour. Anyone else thinking that?

His experience would have been a factor, for example if he was playing against us he would certainly know how to wind our fans up and get a hostile atmosphere going which his players could feed off of and probably see us turn on our own players or just ignore the on pitch action as we focus on the dug out.
So yes, his knowledge of these clubs would have helped and he may have played mind games but I don't think he crossed the line and shook hand pre-match on which side would take home the points, At best he may have got a tip off on what formation/team selection the manager was looking to pick from one of his contacts but he could have worked that out from scouting.

He is the manager we should have brought in just after Christmas. We would be a Championship club next season had we done that.

Over the past 20 matches, Reading are bottom of the league. I suspect that has more to do with Reading getting relegated, than anything else.

That's a reasonable and objective view and I wouldn't argue against but I just have a nagging feeling that there might be a bit more to it.

The truth is we weren't good enough and deserve to go down. Nothing to do with other clubs. 2 wins in 22 games is 100% relegation form.

We have to take this painful blow on the chin, get the right manager in and build a team to get us back to the championship.

Well were it not for a a bs points deduction we would have been safe quite comfortably.

I called this a couple of weeks back, I would be certain if you checked Colin`s latest phone bill you would see outgoing calls to Cardiff and Sheffield recently.

Warnock was never an option for us this season. I still believe that if Huddersfield's takeover didn't go through, they wouldn't have stayed up, and that's without going into administration (which probably would have happened).

His first few fixtures before the ownership saw them drop even further behind and took a couple of hammerings, the feeling around the club completely changed once they new administration was off the table.

He was retired and extremely doubtful he would have come to Reading as he doesn’t seem to like us for some reason, think he only answered the call from Huddersfield as he has connections and friends still there.

The efl knew when they announced the fixtures that this would happen right?

I agree to a point, however the late points deduction, some extremely dubious refereeing decisions and Huddersfield managing a few 'better than expected' results are all factors in relegation. If you remove the impact of any one of these I suspect we would have been safe.
Unfortunately our lack of aggression and poor tactics didn't help either!

Would be more inclined to look at just 6 wins in 34 games (50% of those wins coming in a 4 game period too) and just 1 clean sheet in 23 games. Difficult to win games if you’re needing to score at least 2 every time

Huddersfield (and Cardiff) gambled with managerial changes and it payed off. We didn’t. I think we would have stayed up if we’d sacked Ince earlier but then you’re on that recurring pattern again of relying on a manager bounce to stay up before realising 3 months into the new season that they’re not actually very good. It isn’t a particularly sustainable way of running a club

Genuinely, I preferred being relegated without appointing Warnock than staying up under him. I we ever appoint him, I will no longer be a fan.

We've all got our red lines.

For me Warnock is a pantomime villain rather than a real villain. Loveto hate him, would be perfectly happy to have him.

Harry Redknapp, Jose Mourinho (lol) or Sam Alladyce on the other hand would inspire the same reaction in me as Warnock does for Schards

Even if Warnock did fix it for Huddersfield, it shows it was an even more shrewd appointment when they knew they had Cardiff and Sheffield United to play at the tail end of the season

Not so....

https://www.getreading.co.uk/sport/foot ... r-23381149

But he said on the radio he always had a soft spot for us and would take the job if it was offered at the time the job was vacant. Unfortunately we went for Ince and didn't even call him.
Wouldn't have mattered what he cost.....we pretty much must have known the accounts wouldn't balance...few quid more wouldn't have hurt.
