Here are the RFC managers in my time following the club. Ive listed them in order of personal preference *no homo*

1. Coppell
2. McDermott
3. McGhee
4. Evans
5. Pardew
6. Quinn/Gooding
7. Branfoot
8. Porterfield

10. Rodgers
11. Burns
12. Adkins

Adkins is about as popular as AIDS in a convent. A complete Bell End of a man who has had one of the best squads in the clubs history and failed to deliver either results or entertainment. He's at least part of the reason why I'm not renewing my ST for the 1st time in 25 years.

He did see him give us a promotion, a league title, a cup win, our highest ever league placing and a league record that still stands today. Branfoot's downfall was to hang around for a year too long. Still puts him up there as one of our best managers regardless of how it ended. The 'over capacity' games v Wolves & Coventry showed how popular his team were at their best. Prob the equivalent of us getting 50,000 for a game now, if that were possible.

Absolutely agreed. Branfoot's style might not have been to everyone's taste, but boy he gave us some great moments as a manager. The Coventry semi is one of the all-time great games. Ranking him as one of the more popular RFC managers is a fairly straight forward affair.

I make that McD 6, Adkins 3, with 5 ties. At the very least, I don’t think it would be at all accurate to suggest Adkins had a better squad. Seems strange that the same people arguing this case were ripping the piss out of the likes of Pog, Drenthe, Williams, Guthrie and McCleary on other threads.

Doesn’t seem like they really believe Adkins squad is very good at all.

I think if you did those on the basis of reality rather than to back up your preconceptions you'd get quite different answers.

You also need to factor in that Brian had the chance to bring in players he wanted, whereas Adkins has had to work with the players Brian wanted, plus the players Anton wanted

Aye, I guess it's all subjective - which is why I don't really get how you can say non-scoring and rather indifferent Pog is better than Roberts who was the catalyst of our promotion.

Nor how Blackman is equal to Hunt considering how many goals Hunty banged in for us compared to the kinda invisible Blackman.

And Williams, Drenthe and Guthrie hardly strung more than three games together, the latter was regularly destroyed on here (including by yourself).

Aside from the fact I was just messing about, you can't type out that list on "the basis of reality" because there's no universal measure of how good a footballer is.

It will always come down to personal perception which is why the game is as widely discussed as it is, including on this forum.

Absolute nonsense having Quinn/Gooding so high up and Branfoot so low down. The only thing more enjoyable than the Simod Cup and the Record Breaking Royals year was turning up early to shout BRANFOOT OUT for an hour or so.

Yeah probably, if I was just talking about Obita. But it's not a laughable, controversial or even tricky point to appreciate that there is little worth using several players to add value to Adkins squad if they didn't get much chance to play.

Don't mind Adkins getting stick but the 'stronger squad' argument seems manufactured.

Funny, I know someone who worked at Hogwood when he left who said everyone was devastated when he was sacked and also someone who knew him when he was Slough manager who still speaks to him almost every week and says he hasn't changed a bit.

The opinion from Hogwood of our former Russian saviour is a very different story.

Yeah, that is mental. Whether you agree McD's time was up or not, he still had an excellent run few of us will forget.

Adkins hasn't really done anything. Apart from not be completely shit in a crisis.

I met him once when he was at Woking and we had a lengthy chat. He never once spoke to me personally in all the time he was at Reading so quite obviously he changed for the worse.
