Oh yes, we could. Especially if we value him more than that.

This has probably been mentioned elsewhere on this thread or previous one but was a release clause added when his contract was re-negotiated?

AthleticoSpizz My daughter took over (his now Mrs's) job............when Shane got paid, and they obviously didn't her revenue anymore.

A totally pointless post...but just my tenuous link to a great kid that we have seen develop from Kevin Doyles stable-mate/make weight, to a potential world class player.

Enjoy the media hype Shane...........you've earnt it this season

He's done well in the second tier of English football for one season-"A potential world class player" strikes me as a bit OTT but maybe by keeping on talking him up we might get more than the anticipated £3million.

Super_horns Sky Sport say you could be getting an offer of 7.5 million for Long from Bayern!

our recent rep for developing a quality player adds one or two million to that. the thought of him leaving us for more than kitson or doyle is a bit mad though.

Bayern enter Long race - Report

Bayern Munich are set to join Premier League trio Everton, Newcastle and Wolves in the race to sign highly-rated Reading striker Shane Long.

Long, 24, impressed during the 2010/11 campaign after firing 26 goals for the Royals - form which has brought him to the attention of a number of higher ranking clubs.

Royals chairman John Madejski claimed recently that he'd expect Long to fetch a fee in the region of £20million, but according to the News of the World, Bundesliga giants Bayern are prepared to open the bidding at £7.5million.

Whether that tempts Reading to sell remains to be seen, but with the Republic of Ireland striker reportedly keen to test himself at a higher level, it does appear likely that Long will move on to pastures new this summer.

When questioned about his Reading future earlier this week, Long said: "I don't know, we'll see what happens, really. I am just going to take a few weeks out now and relax and if anything does come my way, I'll have a look at it. We'll see what happens."

Asked about the reported interest in him, Long added: "They have to come in first, so we will see what happens.

"But as it stands, I am a Reading player and I am looking forward to a Reading season unless that changes over the next few weeks.

"It's been a long season at Reading. We finished on a bit of a down, but it was good for me.

"I played over 50 games last season and I learnt a lot.

"I am looking forward to next season, but all the same, a few weeks out will be nice."

Everton, Wolves and Newcastle have also all been credited with an interest in Long, who joined Reading from Cork City alongside Kevin Doyle for a nominal fee back in 2005.

He's a joker that Madejski!

£7.5m would be fantastic money and way more than I'd expect us to be able to bring in for him under the circumstances. Go to Bayern if that's true Shane, some time in the German League and European competition would do you the world of good and give some new footballing perspective to the Premier League & Championship.

He didn't actually say he expected £20million. He simply said thats what he valued him at.

I would be delighted if he went to Bayern, delighted. Anything over 5 million sell to them please. Lets face it, we won't see any of the transfer fee spent on the team so I'd rather he went for 5 million to bayern than some horrible prem club who arent much better than us for 7 mill.

Everyone is assuming this, but I'm not too sure....

Brian said this a few days ago, which rather implies there ISN'T a release clause......

McDermott told BBC Berkshire: "If a Premier League club comes in and we decide the deal is right and Shane wants to go there's nothing we can do".

That could just mean that we'd cinsider some deals under his agreed fee as being good business.

It could also just be McDermotts turn of phrase. I'd be amazed if the club haven't got some form of agreement with Long over letting him go for the right deal.

Think it should be taken with pinch of salt simple comment made to reinforce just how much shane is worth ie 'don't be thinking you will be getting him on the cheap'

I think a move to Bayern (if true) is a good move at his age, he can get 2-3 years then come back to try EPL

It may well be that after what we got for certain other players, and what is seen as their value now, Siggy well over £10m, Doyle similar. that the club have changed tack and gone for a different approach, perhaps a decent wage with no release clause, but a bonus on leaving of say 10% of the fee.
