Entertaining game at Ebbsfleet. The 3-2 scoreline reflects what was quite a close game, with Ebbsfleet featuring a number of older players who were slightly more physical (as well as putting on a sub - Lanre Azeez - who looked about 12 but was powered by rocket fuel).

For me, Obita was a class above everybody else on the field, but Tshibola and Taylor had good games too. Both Lossassa and Samuel showed some good touches when they came on as subs. The defence looked a bit shaky at times, but that was as much to do with Ebbsfleet giving it a good go as anything else. This certainly didn't have the air of a pre-season after-you-Claude friendly.

The ground had open terracing at one end (where I spent the second half) and small stands on the other three sides. The one at the far end still had an advert "Trumans Beers" visible on the roof, years after that name has disapperaed from use.

The balls were kicked clean out of the ground about twice as often as goals were scored.

Attendance 537. The away fans might just have made it into double figures.

I was there with my other half, and I saw 2 people in the hoops so that makes 5!

Most have been you to the left of me Upper West Ginger as there many of us there as you say.

Impressed by Sweeney, looks to have potential but do agree Obita stood out for us. Some good direct running by those that played in the centre of the pitch with some through balls to add.

Sheppard and Williams will never play first team football for us.

I was a bit concerned to notice that Shane Griffin looks more like Martin Keown than Niall Keown does.

I sat in the stand near the directors' boxes for the first half, then did a tour of the ground (no problem walking all the way round) and stood to the right of the goal in the 2nd half.
You may well be right about Shep and Williams - I saw nothing to suggest they were any better than the level of their opponents (but then, what do I know ...)

Discussing 'friendlies' with a few Reading fans on Saturday. Got to LOL the clubs one and only 'home' friendly is against Palace. Can't imagine what the club was thinking by picking that one. Surely a friendly against a decent foreign team would have been more financially lucrative......I mean, who is going to bother to go to a friendly against Palace?

I assume this is a wind up, but I'll take the bait anyway. Friendlies aren't supposed to be 'financially lucrative'. The whole point is match fitness. If you recall, Palace gave us a tough game at our place last season. And I am sure they'll be difficult a week Saturday. It is plainly obvious why the club picked Palace. Gate receipts from friendlies are immaterial in the scheme of things. But I guess you knew this

So clubs flying to America or the Far East is purely for match fitness :?:

I'll be there. My brother lives in Bournemouth, so I'll be sat with him in the home end. Should be a good game.

Berkhamsted Today
Royals are held as the Tudors bag a draw
Hemel Town 1
Reading XI 1

Hemel Town held a decent Reading XI side to a draw at Vauxhall Road as they continued their impressive pre-season form.
Reading took the lead in the first half through Jordan Obita, but Matt Nolan headed home an equaliser for Hemel after half-time.
Both teams played some attractive football in a lively opening to the game, but it was the visiting Royals who had the first chance as Dominic Samerell fired wide.
Hemel had chances of their own, with Richard Langley curling a free-kick over the bar, before Alex Campana was denied by a good save.
It was Reading who took the lead, however, as Obita cut inside from the right and fired past Osborn at his near post.
Hemel looked sharp in the second half, though, and Nolan restored parity as he headed home Danny May’s cross.
Dave Pearce came close to winning the game for the Tudors but, in the end, a draw was a fair result

TUDORS AND ROYALS ENDS IN STALEMATE
By Darren Kelly | Wednesday 8th August 2012
Hemel Hempstead 1 - 1 Reading X1
Match report from Allan Mitchell

The Tudors held a decent Reading side to a 1-1 draw on Tuesday evening. Both sides played some good football on a very greasy pitch that had to endure some very unseasonal downpours throughout the game.
Hemel's captain Peter Holmes tested the Reading keeper early on but it was the Royals who should’ve taken the lead when Dominic Samerell went clear but put his shot wide when he only had the keeper to beat. Reading’s Jordon Obita then tested Mark Osborn moments later but the Tudors’ keeper stopped the shot with his legs.

Osborn was called into further action when he saved a free kick from just outside the box. Hemel continued to give as good as they got and Richard Langley curled a free kick just over the bar after the lively David Pearce was fouled.

Then Reading keeper Henley saved well from Alex Campana moments later. After 35 minutes the deadlock was finally broken when Jordan Obita stormed down the right before cutting inside and blasting the ball home, beating Osborn on his near post.

Reading nearly made it 2 - 0 straight from the restart but the ball was cleared off the line and then the Tudors went close just before half-time when Osobu beat two Reading defenders but saw his shot blocked.

Half-time Hemel 0 Reading 1.

The second half was very even for the first 20 minutes but Hemel started to gain some momentum and a great cross by Edwards found Pearce whose header was blocked by a Reading defender. The ball then got switched to the right and Danny May sent in a cross that was met by Nolan who headed home Hemel's equaliser.

Pearce then found some space on the edge of the box to get his shot away but it was brilliantly tipped over by Henley. In the final minutes, the Tudors might have nicked it when Pearce put substitute Matthew Judge clear but his shot lacked power and it was cleared off the line.

An entertaining game, and a draw probably a fair result but a promising performance from Dean Brennans’ "new look Tudors".

Southampton played Ajax and only 5,000 went so I don't think it really makes a difference for Premier League clubs. People far more interested in attending league games than some random warm-up match, regardless of the opposition.
