URZZ I remember the east stand singing, "you're not fit to wear the hoops to Coppell", and taking the p1ss out of Owusu whenever he got the ball, as we were 3-0 down.
[/quote]

My memory of it is Owusu coming on for 20 mins or so and being the only player to appear to put any effort in and being cheered for that reason. I may be wrong though!

I'm talking for a minority on that part mind. I remember a few in Y25, whenever he had the ball saying his name really high pitched.

I remember 70/71 - the first tim we had been relegated. This was made worse because the previous season we had looked like World-beaters and the expectation for 70/71 was that we would walk promotion. And yes, we were truly shit for a number of years afterwards. We signed Robin Friday and watching him play made it bearable to watch Reading.

Slightly off topic, I'm re-reading the Robin Friday book which states that Reading had a core support of 4000. Things really have changed.

Wimb I still dispute the fact we were s**t under Rodgers, there were certainly s**t performances but as a whole the team was alright and seemed to slowly be turning the corner. So in answer to the OP I'll have to say 1998/99

so slowly that had we continued to improve at that rate we would be in a league one relegation battle.

Ian Royal Van der Kwaak
Gurney
Bodin
Kromheer
Gray
Holsgrove
Houghton
McKeever
Crawford
Brayson
Scott

Bodin, whilst shite, was a left back, not a centre back. I admire your determination to get him in that team, although obviously the left back spot is quite rightly taken by Gray. Houghton though cannot be included as it leaves no room for Mark Reilly.

That Wimbledon match has cropped up before - I've seen us lose to worse teams, by bigger margins, but that one really does stick out as the pinnacle of sh1tness.

I have to agree with the Alan Pardew comment. Since him Reading have been good. Tommy Burns era was awful, although Reading were doing better with him than with Maurice Evans.

Indeed I was!
I would say that Maurice Evans was good - but the highest he got was 3rd Division wasn't it? Tommy Burns was the equivalent of Division 2 weren't he?

That Wimbledon game really was dire

I remember a young midfielder running the show that day called Leigertwood- wonder what happened to him...

hang on a minute, it's not about who managed at what level, it's about (in this case) who was the better manager in their time here, and Evans was by far the better of the two. If you do want to go down the road of who was the better manager over all, the SPL is a substandard level of football and any trophies won have a shine removed, and maurice evans won the league cup and managed at the highest level in england for oxford.

Burns' spell as manager of reading was awful. worst manager i have had the misfortune to see in charge of my club.

My first memories of us not being shite was whilst under the management of Mark Mcghee.
We were going places until he left.

We were only really 'Crap' when Burns took over, despite massive optimism, (Who can forget Wrexham away)
Brenda weren't great either.

To be honest we have steadily improved under the ownership of John Madejski. For that he has to be commended. Until he took over we were floundering with the likes of Aldershite et al.

I honestly belive that we have found our level. Not good enough for the PL but too good for Divs 1 & 2

Looking back that team doesn't look too bad now. All were very inexperienced though.

Banks, Lewington, Darlington, Gier, Leigertwood, McAnuff, Small, Nowland, Reo-Coker, Agyemang, Mackie (Gray 67).

If we had won the play-off final, 5 of those might have been playing premier league football.

Brenda is a different story though. It's been said all too many times but I will always agree, his footballing method didn't work at Reading, but it doesn't mean to say he's a dump manager.

I think he's class, and with Swansea, or without, he will stay in the Premier.

I agree that overall Maurice Evans was the better of the two in English football, but the original post is about when we were last shit. Personally I would say anything below the old Division 2 would qualify as 'being shit'.

Went to Wrexham away, followed by Bristol Rovers away in the space of 7 days and we were proper sh*t. Rovers then beat us 6-0 at home later that season. Utter rubbish. Before that anything that Bullivant served up. To be honest though, since I've been going (early eighties), the shite days have been totally outnumbered by the good ones. Record wins start to the season, Simod Cup, new stadium, promotions, premiership, play-off finals, record points total........as fans we've constantly had great times supporting this club. Long may it continue. URZ !

I shared your pain

For the past ten or so years, Reading fans have been spoilt

and I'd just like to add....most of the core 4000 predated the obsession with being STH's

I bought my first season ticket for the Norfolk Road stand for the 74/75 season. IIRC, season tickets were not available for the other parts of the ground. Cost me around £17(!) and I was one of around just 700 season ticket holders! 11,000 season ticket holders today is an astonishing figure considering where the club used to be.
