Sutekh Alternatively have 14 qualification groups each with 4 teams or so. But only the winner of each group would qualify
I'd also like to see World Cup games and the European Cup go back to being pure knockout cups with one match per round, no home and away aggregated scores and teams to be picked from a hat not any of this mini-league rubbish to boost tv revenues.

Smaller nations may argue that they will only get one game as reward for taking part but..... they could get the luck of the draw and be drawn against teams they can win against all the way to the final and a cup upset is more likely than a qualifying group stage upset.

It will never happen as long as they make £m's from tv revenue, corporate deals and ticket sales per game it's in their interests to have as many games as possible.

I don't think there's too much domestic football, it's just the way it's scheduled that's taken us, IMO, beyond saturation point. I don't watch too much of it on TV but with the wall to wall football and the ever changing kick off times for TV purposes it does seem different now than it used to be.

International and European football has certainly played a part in that saturation, and, as usual it's all in the pursuit of ever greater TV revenues that it's got a bit out of hand.

The extra international teams and the financial clout of the English game does mean that the Championship is now flooded with international players. Our clubs can afford to pay more than top flight clubs in most other leagues and so we now have the pick of all but the top tier of international players so our players are probably playing more games than they did 15/20 years ago.

To be fair most of the internationals in the Championship are 2nd rate.

Agree with Floyd's post re the the International qualifying games but it doesn't seem to affect Germany and Spain.

We still play far too many domestic games - its time to bin the league cup - who exactly does it benefit? Just a handful of sides in the prem like Liverpool/Tottenham/Everton who will never go down but will never win the league

And the lower league clubs for who a draw away atOld Trafford or Anfield is a huge highlight and a financial godsend.
If you scrapped it maybe a look at how much of the obscene wealth in the Premier League is filtered down to the lower divisions might be in order....

Most lower league clubs don't even treat it seriously now

OK - why haven't England won anything for 50 years? The international breaks and extended european games haven't affected Germany or Spain or others in the past. They play far less domestic games than us - what have our national managers been saying for years about all our players being knackered at the end of the season

What is more important? Morecambe getting a payday at Old trafford against Man U reserves in a pointless competition or England progressing once in a while?

Survival of football across the divisions.

England hasn't won anything because we once weren't good enough to, now, we have minimal English players getting a game.....the removal of competitive games will excarbate this further

fcuk off back to the AE racist thread.

IF there are too many 2nd rate foreigners playing in England, it's only because the 2nd rate English players are all too lazy to compete with them.

How about 5 divisions of twenty with 4 up / 4 down to keep more games interesting in the second half of the season? or even 6 or 8 team play-offs? Make the League Cup for football league clubs only and then there could be a big day out at Wembley for a couple of Championship teams each year (in addition to the play-off final)

Yeah but it's taipairoyal who's a massive twat.

We struggle with skill, application and management in this country.

It's not just in football we have this problem.

When was the European Cup played as one match per round with no aggregate scores?

The World Cup hasn't been a straight knockout since 1938, and that was one of only two ever played that way (the other was 1934). Given how awful the knockout rounds are, with negative football and teams playing for penalties, reducing the number of knockout games would be better idea.

Part of the problem with the Europa League in particular is the scrapping of the Cup Winners Cup, and the decision to bung the CL 3rd place clubs into it as well. The competition just has too many clubs in it.
