I'm sorry - but it's laughable to say he's not allowed to go out and have a bit of fun when he knows he's not going to play for us ever again! As for being a bad role model - how does that work? Younger players know he's not being picked, might even know about the contract situation, hear he's gone out for a few drinks the night before a game he's not playing in and hasn't travelled with the rest of the team for, and you think they're going to copy him by going out drinking the night before a game, even though a) if it's an away game, chances are they're with the team anyway in a hotel close to where the game is going to be played and b) they're not stupid.

I actually hope the contract situation comes to light at the end of the season, then some of you might realise that we're not talking shite.

Don't worry RL it's relatively common knowledge about the contract situation for Shorey, it's fairly standard in one year deals.

When McD left, any real chance of Shorey being here next year went too esp. on those wages. NA won't want to be tied to a player in his situation. So Shorey out drinking is no problem at all - his season is over and he won't be playing for anyone competitively until August. Even if we have an injury crisis in the last two games, we'll see a youth player in before Shorey.

The Watford goalkeeper who made 2 mistakes against Leeds on Saturday wasn't in the squad.

2 Injuries to players and he's on the pitch playing. The point is situations can change very quickly and Shorey may have been needed to be drafted in last minute.

By drinking the night before a match, Adkins wouldn't be able to call on him...

Cummings & Harte could have both been back-up plus the youth squad. We would rather play the youth squad than Shorey if the contract rumours are true. If he's been told his season is over then you can't begrudge him a night out.

No harm done. Not the best signing tbh, but had a reasonable go of things and I think still remains the most accurate crosser of the ball in the team this season.

Won't shed any tears when he leaves, but don't think the lad deserves any shit either.

I'm still not convinced the reason he isn't playing is contractual, I just don't trust anyone claiming to know contract details. If it was the case, I'm not sure why Adkins would have played him in his first game in charge instead of Harte, Cummings or Kelly. If you know it's going to be his only game, why bother? I think he was having a look to see if he was worth keeping and decided no, so no point playing him again. so I do agree he's not got a future here though.

Don't have a problem with him going out for a drink if he knows he's not in the squad and that it'd take an epic disaster for him to get into it.

I've not seen alot of Reading this season, but I was at The Emirates for the Arsenal game, and Shorey had the worst game I have ever seen him play. On the back of that gutless performance, Adkins is spot on not to want him in the squad for the rest of the season, and will ship him out in Summer

Said it at the time, Shorey was another clueless McDermott signing.

Lots has been said about him not being bothered to turn up for 2007/8. His attitude stinks. This rubberstamps it.

Shame, cos with a bit of dedication, he could've done so much better. Villa and Fulham fans certainly never rated him either.

See ya.

Bit unfair talking about Hunt and Shorey in the same sentence. Agree with you totally about Shorey and you would think that after getting disciplined earlier in the season, he'd a least make an attempt to keep his hand off the jar. Hunt in my mind is a model professional.

Was just about to say this also, you beat me to it.
Of everyone at the club, Hunt is literally the player most likely to bleed for the shirt. The Hunt brothers were never the most talented Reading players but I'd say in terms of teamwork, effort and attitude they'd both be in the top 5 Reading players over the last ten years.

stephen believed the hype and fell into the trap of beleiving he was better than he was and we were holding him back. He also fell away repeatedly in the second half of a season, because he'd prove he could perform and then get complacent and lose it.

He really was just too stupid for his own good.

It's a vicious circle. If he had shown more commitment and professionalism, he would have been offered a contract and played more games.

Going out before games drinking isn't going to help either his or our cause.

People have been shot for less in these parts :|

Never forget that, regardless of any perceived lack of commitment, any number of poor performances (even an entire season's worth whilst crying like a baby because he wasn't signed by West Ham as we were being relegated :| ) the sun always shines out of Shorey's backside blinding the vast majority who sit in the East stand.

Simply, it's NEVER little Nicky's fault and don't EVER forget it
