Wimb Good performances and effort from players is what gets fans noisy, players just can't have it both ways anymore. They can't claim thousands because they're marketed as 'entertainers' while still hoping to instantly have unwavering support from thousands of strangers they have no real connection with when they actually fail to entertain week after week.

How do they build those connections with fans? Again, it's through effort, hard work and producing something worth watching.

Why do people get behind Pog? Because they see him busting a gut. Why do they support Alfie? (even if at ridiculous times) because he scores goals, Guthrie? Because he pings 30-yarders. Go back in time and you had big backings for Gilkes and Kebe because they bombed down the flanks, Quinn, Forster, Kitson and Doyle because they scored goals, Parky because he charged around, the list goes on and the formula to getting fans behind players isn't rocket science.

Whenever a player has a pop at the crowd it makes me think they're looking for someone else to blame for their own poor form or insecurities. Crumbs if they can't produce when a couple of hundred Reading fans are giving it a muffled boo, what hope do they have of producing when 70,000 are on them at Old Trafford?! Small wonder that the two players having a pop are Cummings, who was subbed at the break for a teenage winger and McCleary who's also lost his place in the side (albeit somewhat unfairly IMO).

Not saying there's no room for improvement from the crowd, who should be trying to help players as much as possible but this group of players has a lot of work to do before they can just expect unwavering support.

Personally I'll try and back players as much as I can, even when they make the odd mistake but if they keep making that same stupid mistake multiple times in a game then a bit of grief from the crowd should be expected in the same way that your boss would probably get annoyed if you made the same error four times in a day despite having done your highly paid job for years.

Agree, I feel little connection with this side and posted similar elsewhere about this team lacking players like those you mention above... but at the end of the day though, I can't be bothered to turn up and sit and wait for something to happen, it makes what is already bloody dull even worse.

Not sure it's about giving the players themselves unwavering support, but more about having a bit of pride as fans and saying "alright not happy with what i'm seeing but i'll show my pride in the club even if the players aren't showing it on the pitch."

The standard of football played generates the atmosphere, and the way we are playing at the moment, thats not generating much noise.
The boys in Y25 make absolutely no difference to the atmosphere what so ever, all they do is chant childish ditties to away fans which serves no purpose to the ambience. When the game is exciting, the East stand (and other parts of the stadium) spontaneously sing and chant, generating that good atmosphere.
As previous posters have already noted, there are no players that have a rapport with the fans at the moment, and so we lack that sort of 'Hero Worship' that often in the past motivated a feigned player.

Another atmosphere killer must be the 'After Goal Celebration' music. When we score the crowd jump up wildly celebrating making as much noise as we will ever make and in the perfect mood to start some good chanting when all of a sudden............the tannoy takes over, men turn to morons, 3 bursts of oi! oi! oi! and every one sits back down again, cue the Y25 Morons.........'Your not singing anymore'!

I hope everyone commenting about the chanting is brave enough to give starting one a go? If not then there lies your problem.

People are not obliged to join in, and often they won't. But if anyone gives it a crack I refuse to let that person end up 'on your own'... and the people who chant that shit or find it funny are the worst kinds of dickhead, probably trying to make themselves feel big & clever after being repeatedly bullied at school.

I don't bother starting many chants at home because it drowns out in 10 seconds as some random generic shit is sung over the top.

Away I always start chants, it generally get's a good going there over the singing at other fans stuff. Even if I end up singing whole chants on my own away from home, I feel better about doing that than attempting to start one at home.

Fair enough, but cos most people think like that homes are pretty shit for atmosphere.

I guess there are just too many moody old gits sat between people who want to support the team vocally as well as with their cash! Which links back to Tony Le Mesmers point...

Reserved seating is the true arse rape of the atmosphere, and the day out too for people who occasionally bring non STHs but theres only random single seats dotted around.

Can't disagree with that, getting to stand with your mates and strangers with the same attitude as you is probably the single biggest contribution to atmosphere. Besides actually making the atmosphere of course.

rob the royal A lot of people on here seem to think that booing and encouraging can't be done by the same people. I booed various passages of terrible play the other day where we'd tossed the ball forward aimlessly after holding on to it to wait for that golden opportunity to just lump it up field...

Sums up why I don't attend home fixtures.

fan base is full of mongs and tards, just accept it and move on.

Well, thats very constructive LWJ, as well as being highly offensive to those people that have had the misfortune to have a relative with a learning or mental problem.

Yeah, cos the Urban Dictionary is the very first place I turn to when I'm unsure as when something is offensive or not.

For your information LWJ, the expression 'Mong' that you used is not a verb. It is a slang phrase they derived from the unfortunate Chromosomal condition known as 'Mongolism'.
And the expression 'Tard' is derived in the same manner from the also unfortunate underdevelopment (normally mental) in human beings known as retarded.

Any one that has had the heartbreak of a child or sibling with one of these conditions are usually big enough to disdainfully ignore you, but for your own dignity you may well be better off not trying to justify your misguided findings.

Exactly. The irony is that the people using these 'insults' don't even know what they mean

Thought the Y25/26 mob did a pretty good job in the first half up until the goal. North Stand was morose today (I sit there).

Really poor effort from Y19 to Y22. Did a great job of not turning up and supporting the team today. yeah the weather was awful and we've been playing like dross lately, but this is our team and I'll turn up regardless, hoping to see the game when it finally clicks.

C'mon URRRZZZ!!!!
