seeing as a longer contract would mean a higher fee usually he would be foolish to do this if he didnt want to stay past jan, could put off many potential biddersby the same token, more in fee means less in wages for his good self-i just dont seehim signing this unless jan is a definite no no-or hes very generous and is doing it solely for the financial benefit of the club that made him

cant see this as anything other than good

he stays past jan, and A:fires us into the prem, or B:gets us more money for him in the summer

win win

That's alright.
If news came out today that Doyle refused an extension or whatever, that, of course would be a better sign to the fans that he could leave in January.

Great news.

S09Royal
Archie's penalty Great news but does this definitely mean he won't go in January? If so then it's wonderful news!

I'm sure he won't go in January now! If he did want to go in Januray why would he sign a new contract?
He said in his own words, on the OS, "i hope that signing this new deal will take away any speculation surrounding my own future and allow me to focus totally on achieving my own and the club's ambition of returning to the Premier League at the end of the season." I don't think he's going anywhere!
This bit, from the OS will put to rest the worry and uncertainty to whether he'll still be a Royal come the beginning of Feb.

DOYLE IS A ROYAAAL! Lalalalaaa
Hatrick on Saturday now pleease!

rg6royal Great news and good to see his heart is with the club.

'greeed. ain't it lovely

And, of course, players always prepare the wording of 'their own words'!

Why would he sign a new contract if he wasn't fully committed to staying? For the very reasons that floyd-streete explains so well. It's the infamous 'win-win' situation for both parties. Good business and therefore good news but it certainly doesn't guarantee that he will still be a Reading player in February 2009.

And if you still think otherwise, wait and see how the club will respond to any questions regarding a release clause. In all probability it will either be no response at all or something that has to remain confidential. I very much doubt that there will be a categoric statement that there is no such release clause or any other similar provision in this new contract. Hoping to be proved wrong though!

I have a vague memory of a statement, possibly by Coppell, a few months ago which said there was no specific release clause in Doyle's contract. That also fits with the Hammond interview last week when he was talking about Doyle and Stephen Hunt, but specifically only mentioned Hunt when saying about triggering a clause.

So it would obviously be of interest if there was one now.

just cant see the club negotiating one now, unless it was big enough to prohibit a january sale, or kick in if not promoted

I think that is probabaly the key to this extension, as otherwise the club have no reason to sell him if they don't wish to.

Should be staying. Contracts in football unfortueantley don't seem to be worth much to players sometimes, I think there is still a chance of him leaving, just it has been significantly reduced now.

Just allow it mate.I think we can safely say that his recent body language and reaction towards the RFC crowd in general dispel your line of thinking.Recently he was talking about the club making decisions outside of his control.Well, this decision was made collectively,in advance of the window, and confirms what a humble lad he is.Fair play to the Doyler.Altogether now - 'DOYLE is a ROYAL!'

Yes I agree as he is no Nikolas Anelka cynically choosing to sign a new contract and then pressing to leave Bolton months later when the transfer window re-opened.
Doyle has made clear he has signed a deal to avoid all the transfer rumours come January. Thats good enough for me.
This is good news.

this should be a good thing as you would think this shows doyles comitment to the club
but it may simply be a way of jacking up his value so that it puts some clubs off buying him and january and if they are still interested a higher fee would be required

i personally hope that this is a sign of where doyles priorities lie

will hunt follow this example.....somehow i doubt it

Fantastic news, it would be brilliant if S Hunt commited to a similar contract, it would give everyone connected with the club a boost and a real signal of the teams intent to push forward and take us back to the premier league.

Fantastic news! It's the only thing that could convince everyone - well, most people - that he wanted to stay...although didn't S Hunt sign a new contract earlier this year?

Didn't Shunt sign a new contract not too long ago?

There will be a clause in his contract to leave at a cut down price in the summer if you're not promoted.

Anyone that thinks this proves his committment is deluded, it's a smokescreen to make everyone happy, SHORT TERM. FACT.

rhroyal Who says footballers are mercenaries now? I'd agree with them in general, which is why I'm beginning to fall in love with Doyle now. If he wanted to Doyle could have held out for a massive rise in January with a Premiership club but instead he's showing great loyalty to us and trying to get us back up to the Premiership. He's paying back the loyalty we showed him when we signed him from Cork and the loyalty Coppell showed him on his barren run last season. Not many players would be so honourable and professional. On his was to becoming a Reading LEGEND!

Hammond - "Doyler, we know you wanna leave and go to the prem so we'll do a deal - stay with us past jan and we'll give you a pay rise. If we're promoted you're in the prem and so are we, if we're not, you leave in the summer not Jan for a knockdown price"

Doyle - "Only if the pay rise is backdated to the start of the season and the release clause is low, you can always say it's "undisclosed" when i leave so as not to piss those mugs off that turn up every week"

Hammond - "ok, sign now and we can play up to the media mugs and the fans that everything is rosey"

Doyle - "signed"

Everyone knows a contract means fuck all. He aint committed, he's just agreed to wait 6 months if he's compensated with more dosh in the mean time.

not gonna go through and quote everyone, but to all those who are giving it the "well he'll be off in the summer if we don't go up" - no s**t sherlock! of course he will!

Doyle is a prem quality striker. not a Rooney or a Torres, but would start for probably 10 or so prem league sides right now.

The guy has come out and effectively say "i want to get this team up!". he feels he owes us something, and is coming out with as many positive comments as Doobs, Rosenior and the likes to try and fire something up.

If he scores 30 and we don't go up he will be perfectly entitled to go and further his career with someone in the prem, just as Ebanks-Blake, McCormack or whoever would if their sides didn't go up.

yes his wages will have taken a hike and a release clause will be in there (which i'm guessing may not have been there before?), but when you read his comments he is pretty much saying "i wanna take this side up - there is unfinished business". Maybe the Kitson and Little admirers should take a view on that.

Starting to see something come together here. Yes, there is something in this for Kevin, but it is a good calculated gamble by all parties.
