NewCorkSeth P!ssed Off No, you can't have a goal without a goalscorer.
But you can have a goal without anyone credited with an assist. Therein lies the difference.
What goal is to goalscorer, is not the same as what goal is to assistor. Reasoning does not follow a valid or logical path.
Besides I addressed this (I thought), if we are going to credit someone with a goal when they didnt mean to score then we should also credit someone with an assist when they didnt mean to pass. A goal that deflects is not an own goal therefore a pass that deflects is not an (for lack of better terminology) an own assist.
Another possible solution is to say that the equivelant of a goal without an assist is a pass without a finish (imagine if, when Gareth squared it to Alfie for his third Alfie had missed)
Not sure what you're on about there.
A goal isn't necessarily a credit. Take an own goal for example.
It's merely a way of documenting who was most responsible for the goal.
An assist on the other hand is always a positive 'credit'. Given when someone has made a worthy contribution immediately prior to a goal.
If the opposition goalkeeper gives it straight to our striker to score then the goalkeeper will not be granted an assist.
It's not a necessity unless you're playing fantasy football.
McCleary to Le Fondre for the 1st goal was not a deflected pass anyway, it was a blocked shot. Why should he be given massive credit for having his shot blocked. That's not an achievement.
The Football League has credited Reading players with 26 assists this season. We've scored 44 goals.
Take it up with them.
