Fake Hoops Build Up Thread - Getting tasty at the bottom

by LoyalRoyalFan » 28 Oct 2012 20:51

Surely the biggest game of McDermott's managerial career? This really is a must-win game. QPR are there for the taking, local derby and a really good chance for our first win of the season.

Reading vs QPR, 9th game in the PL season bigger than FA Cup QFs against Villa and City? Bigger than a Play Off Final?

Surely we should start considering other options if we come away from Loftus Road next Sunday with a loss?

Wouldnt say they are 'there for the taking'. The fact is like the vast majority of teams in this league they have better quality players than us and it will be a very difficult game. Would love i if we beat them though, Hughes will be on his way if we do surely?!

I am now settled on treating this as a 4 team league for us; Reading, Norwich, Saints and QPR. We need to finish top of the league to stay up. All the other teams are there to take points off but those 3 are our key opponents.

As to the person who felt that Fulham was a 6 pointer (on BBCRB after the game) - they look like finishing well up the league, not joining us in a dog fight for survival. You could include Villa and a couple of others in the league but so long as we finish with 3 teams below us we are safe - and those are my likely 3.

From that you can take it that I expect to see a result on Sunday as that really is a 6 pointer. As is the following Saturday.

I'm pretty confident QPR will pull clear. I think there is a 5 team league at the bottom:

Reading, Southampton, Villa, Wigan, Norwich.

I think Wigan will win this league which makes it 3 from 4!

Could well be McD's biggest.

Lose 3-0 at QPR, go bottom, crisis times, possibly manager sacked

Win there and we will probably be out of the bottom 3, 5 clear of bottom with a game in hand

Of course it's a monster game. it could be worth 50+ Million

I really think we need four points from QPR/Norwich

And if QPR lose: bottom, crisis times, possibly manager sacked. A win will kick start their season.

Absolute must win for QPR (or at least Hughes), not as much for us but realistically still a must-not lose. Both managers should be treating this like a cup final

These two games will be massive. Norwich are no mugs.

We lose at QPR we could easily fail to beat Norwich

and then it really would look bad.

13 P9 GD -01 9 Points Stoke
14 P8 GD -02 9 Points Sunderland (Game in Hand v Reading)

15 P9 GD -06 8 Points Wigan
16 P9 GD -11 7 Points Norwich
17 P9 GD -07 6 Points Aston Villa

18 P8 GD -06 4 Points Reading (Game in Hand v Sunderland)
19 P9 GD -12 4 Points Southampton
20 P9 GD -11 3 Points QPR

With 3 points for a win, a game in hand and having to play Villa twice, two points is hardly a big gap
More or less the same can be said for Norwich and Wigan

Then, in the next two rounds of matches there are plenty of six-pointers

For us to be 5 points off safety requires Villa to win at Sunderland (dragging them into the mix)

Wigan would need to draw at Spurs (good luck with that!)

Norwich, to get to 9 have to beat Stoke.

So, sure it COULD happen. Then we'd be 5 points behind FIVE clubs on 9 points and us with two games in hand.

Premier League Fixtures

Norwich V Stoke
Sunderland V Aston Villa

Tottenham V Wigan
QPR V Reading
West Brom V Southampton

Everton V Sunderland
Reading V Norwich
Southampton V Swansea
Stoke V QPR
Wigan V West Brom

The next two league games are very VERY big for us and November is MASSIVE, will surely define our season.

Two draws against QPR/Norwich would be OK points-wise but the fail-to-win would then be a huge monkey on our back

A draw and a defeat would be near-catastrophic and would put McD under severe threat of the sack.

Two defeats and I think he'd resign.

I think we will know an awful lot by the end of November as then we'll have played
Stoke, QPR, Norwich, Wigan, Villa. We will probably need WWDD from those 4 as
the other game is Everton and December-January looks horrendous.

I really hope people don't round on McDermott regardless of the QPR or the rest of novembers results. When you are getting beat as we will more often that not every decision you make is looked upon negatively with the benefit of hindsight.

He got us out of the Championship by punching way above our weight in terms of squad quality. If we end up going down with the parachute payments and the additions we have made already we should be in a very good place.

+1. Relegation is by no means a forgone conclusion but if it happens I would be gutted if McDermott wasn't given the chance to try and take us back up.
