MATCHWATCH : Exeter City (a)

by Sutekh » 07 Oct 2025 12:19

When : Saturday October 11 2025, 3pm
Where : St James Park, Stadium Way, Exeter, EX4 6PX
Capacity : 8,197

Bored? Fed up with the interminable tedium of stupid international breaks? Well Reading have developed a new solution just for you! Don't sign players that have an international pedigree and take them for a day trip to Exeter!

It's a rather fortunate timing though, as actually Exeter are a thoroughly decent hard working outfit that can win at Sincil Bank despite being 17th in the table (only 2 places above Reading thanks to 2 more points and the usual better GD from 1 game more), as the international break has robbed Exeter of one of the division's better strikers in Josh Magennis who is their leading scorer with 4 goals. This means that former Royal Jayden Wareham is likely to start so maybe not so fortunate after all. In addition to Jayden comes defender Pierce Sweeney to add to the prospect of being done over by the old boys.

Generally Exeter have proven better on their travels than at home and are 2 weeks away from a derby date with Plymouth so one hopes that the management at Reading can come up with a plan to have an international break worth remembering for a change.

Referee

James “son of Paul” Durkin

Previously

5 Nov 24 > Cheltenham 1-0 Reading (Trophy)

Historically

St James Park hasn't been too bad for Reading down the years with the 17 Reading wins being just 2 fewer than Exeter themselves have managed in the league down the years. Jayden Wareham was the match winner in this fixture last year though so perhaps not best to get too carried away with things.

How to follow the game

  1. Get a ticket and go
  2. Listen to Radio 5 Live and/or a myriad of other radio stations for score flashes
  3. Ring/text a mate for updates
  4. Use a RoyalsTV subscription
  5. BBC Radio Berkshire (FM : 104.4, 104.1 or 95.4 depending where you are in the area)

Really not clear on this, everywhere I’ve looked, plus asking AI, suggests there are still no tv games due to the 3pm blackout despite being an international weekend. A check on SkySports+ tv schedule for Saturday though does suggest there will be a L1 game shown:

Went to the 6-4 in 1993

Shaka declined a fabulous and potentially saucy opportunity to show us the score

The match is definitely on TV. The 3pm blackout doesn’t apply on international weekends. Will be on red button.

Assuming there will be some changes for this with Lane failing to impress for 45 minutes against mk.

I'm guessing we'll see:

..................Pereira
Ahmed, Burns, Dorsett, Jacob
............Wing, Savage
.....Ritchie, Doyle, Kyerewaa
..................Marriott

And Doyle probably needs to do something or lose his place.

I think Ahmed could do with a break from starting. Be interesting to see if Yids makes the bench. Looking like O'Connor won't.

Was speaking to a couple of Exeter fans at the end of last week, and they think Wareham has been doing ok for them so far (though the less said about his Father, who has been publicly moaning about the Manager not playing Jaydon enough, the better!)

Not listed on Sky's app yet - which they are usually pretty assiduous at updating. Hope you're right though.

I am right. Exeter also confirmed it on the match preview - https://www.exetercityfc.co.uk/news/match-preview-reading-h

STAR's twitter account saying we've sold 1,053 for this. We probably would've sold out had there not been uncertainty regarding the international break.

I would have gone. However stupidly expecting it to be called off, made other arrangements. Annoyingly I think its on telly. Going to miss this as well

I think he may still keep Ritchie on the bench for this one. Otherwise yeah think that’ll be the team

I’d also give Ahmed a break. What’s happened to Fraser - don’t think we’ve heard about him being injured have we?

Ahmed hasn`t impressed recently, I`m up for giving Yids an hour with Abrefa on the bench.
I`d start with Ritchie and see how long he can go instead of an impact sub. and lets get Reece Evans in the match day squad.

0-2 defeat.

Exeter start strongly and boss the first 20 scoring and missing several other chances; they score a second just before HT after we've had a short 5 min spell of being on top with the referee missing a foul in he build up.

The second half is a non event with Exeter seeing the game out comfortably.

Hunt blames the ref after the game and says we deserved to win.

Shan't bother watching, then.

We've got a fragile run of avoiding defeat now, I just hope we can keep that run going and get some confidence and belief. I'm predicting us to concede early but then come back early in the second half. Potentially even grab a last second winner. I'm going 1-2 win for us.

Pretty much full strength now. Williams the only big player out. No excuses today.

Great to see both O’Connor and Ritchie start, with Yiadom on the bench. Hopefully they’ll bring much needed experience from the start today.
