what I find odd is that you want someone on co coms or punditry who is skilled and knowledgeable, and can give insight to the viewer based on their experience. but the tv companies seem to have allowed themselves to feel pressured by the world of online football content which has become more and more stats based, and so now you get people with a great knowledge of the game, being handed meaningless stats to talk about, because with no context or explanation, the stats literally have no meaning
The people brought onto TV games should be counter to that world, and should be there to explain the human element of what is happening and why. Not just being told to discuss the 'impactful passes in middle 3rd' stat which someone behind the scenes has put up on the screen
