Wide and Wonderful
PlasticRoyale It's not as easy to just go out and buy a great keeper.

Utd struggled to replace Schmeichel.

To be fair Schmeichel was pretty much impossible to replace - he is the definitive goalkeeper that raised the bar

And even so it was still very difficult to score against him. Shows just how good he was imho.

Back to the Arsenal game; has there been any explanation why, although 8 minutes of time were added on (and I know, its a minimum) the Liverpool penalty was awarded in the 11th minute of time added on? (I thought it was a penalty though - daft defending by Eboue)

You add 30 seconds per goal, so lets make it that 9 minutes of time should have been played; no subs came on and there were no injuries, and no obvious, blatant time-wasting (ie: no-one was booked for time-wasting) so - for once - I think Wenger has a point in demanding an answer to that question.

Also, 30 seconds are supposed to be added for a goal, yet Marriner blew IMMEDIATELY after Kuyt scored the penalty......

Regards Arsenal - They just aren't mentally strong enough and I suspect that a lack of British players in the team may well be the reason. English players may not have the flair or fancy tricks that our europeans seem to have in abundance, but by god do we play with some heart and passion in our game. If you look at the teams that have been successful over the last decade and a half, they had a core of British Players in their ranks.

Whilst it is true that Arsene Wenger has changed many things in English football - players are far more professional and health, fitness and athleticism have improved no end in the last 15 years or so because of his influence. But he seems to struggle with develop mental toughness since Tony Adams et al left the club some 8 years ago. (Gallas's sit down strop as captain a prime example.)

English players may have their faults, but a lack competitiveness and mental strenght isn't one of them.

Thats utter and complete cobblers.

"English players don't lack mental strength"!!!!!!!

I guess thats why they are so succesful in penalty shoot-outs then??

I believe the 30 secs for a goal applies to a goal in open play, referee would have added time for the pre-penalty kerfuffle. The taking of a penalty is the only reason a referee can extend time beyond that that he deemed necessary. Once the penalty is successfully concluded (allowing for retakes) the game ends.

Having LOLd at Liverpool when they conceded a penalty after 98 minutes and turned the interweb off, how I LOLd this morning to see the result of the game. And Kenny's spat with Wenger - irrespective of him being Liverpool manager, I really like Dalglish.

Wenger's face is priceless at the end of that clip posted earlier. Knows he hasn't got a leg to stand on after Dalglish's piss-off retort.

Ideal Another thing - the manager should be English. FFS, it's ridiculous.

Why do the FA continually refuse to consider Martin O'Neill?
Are the people in charge really so completely mentally incapacitated?

Yes, they are. But even through their cretinism they can still see that Martin O'Neill is Northern Irish.

Did Liverpool win their 19th league title? You would have thought so by some of the reactions.

Royal Rother A great goalkeeper helps make centre backs look better than they really are. You say he hasn't addressed the CB problem , but Wenger has been a bit unlucky with Vermaelen's injuries. If he had stayed fit (and yes I know Ferdinand has been a crock for the last couple of years) they would probably have won a trophy or 2 this year.

I don't know if you can polish Koscielny and Squillaci. They are absolute toilet. Sceczney (sp) will be a very good keeper but he's not the top keeper that they need. Problem for Arsenal is there aren't that many top keepers around and available, Given maybe although remains to be seen if City would sell to Arsenal. Whilst he may not be a world class keeper I said at the time I don't think David James would have been the worst signing for them last summer. Might not play every week but would offer that top level experience for a season and have Sceczney as the backup.

I also agree with their lack of attacking options. If plan A doesn't work for Arsenal they don't win.

Read somewhere that it was something like this....

Wenger: That was never a penalty
Dalglish: And that was a penalty? ...... oh piss off!

"I was in a winning team and it was impressive," he said. "You felt that if you had a bad game, nothing happened because your team-mates helped you. Now, a lot has changed, and I am the man that everyone looks to. I don't like to say it but it is true. If I play badly, I take responsibility and the pressure of the supporters. Only me and [Robin] Van Persie remain of that generation, and we have a lot of responsibility. Me and Van Persie learned from the best. Now it is different because we are all so young and there is nobody you look at and say: 'Wow.
