Alan Green has been at all the worst games of the tournament. He does scream louder than anyone though so you must have heard him.

Alan Green is a complete pcunt. He's a fukking football journalist and basically has no knowledge on anything else other than the Premier League and possibly the Champions League. He's also up there with Andy Gray in the self-importance stakes.

On the subject of Green, I'm not too happy they've taken him off 606 on Saturday evenings as it's the first real sober opportunity on a Saurday/Sunday I can listen on podcast and get all the stories of the weekend football. Now we're stuck with Robbie Savage :|

Seen probably 95% of all the World Cup games and it's been a slow tournament which has gradually got better through the stages. International football is very much like a game of chess now, it's all about who can break the other down first without giving too much away and it's been a shame the likes of Kaka, Messi, Rooney haven't be able to shine as we've seen previously however the Germans have been very entertaining and a joy to watch. Even when they got beat by Serbia they still played fairly well and I'm hoping they do win the tournament, plus it adds another arguement to the Bundesliga > any other foreign league conversation. Holland for me haven't been as great as their form into the last 4 suggests, aside from an excellent second half display against Brazil it's been ok to watch at times. Spain haven't really played the great football that were associated with them however once they get the lead in a game they are tough to get the ball back off and probably with the Switzerland defeat helped them avoid the cockiness they could have been attributed to. Uruguay have done brilliantly to get where they are now, having comfortably won a Group which should have been much tougher.

Best WC ever? No but this week is going to be refreshingly brilliant with two great SF's and the masterpiece on Sunday night.

Poor tournament. It has improved after a desperate opening week or so. The quarter-finals were pretty good tbf but yet to see the kind of classic games of 1986 and 1982 vintage. The USSR V Belgium 86 game was brilliant...and who can forget Rossi's hat-trick against Brazil in 82.
Surely a great World Cup needs a terrific Brazil side...this World Cup was lacking badly in that respect. This was the worst Brazilian side since 1974 and at least we had the total football of Holland to compensate back then.
2010 will not go down as a vintage. Its been one of the poorest.

PEARCEY . This was the worst Brazilian side since 1974 and at least we had the total football of Holland to compensate back then.

Worse than the 1990 vintage inching to 1-0 wins against Scotland and Costa Rica before going out in the second round? Apart from 20 minutes of madness against the Dutch, we've had a solid Brazilian side with players in Robinho, Elano and Maicon who have been thoroughly entertaining.

The World Cup only needs a gr8 Brazil team so that werthers original sucking oaps brought up on the 1970 and 1982 teams can have something to reminisce about.

Tony Le Mesmer Re both replies above.

Firstly the standard of football is miles behind what you see in the CL. Which, sadly, is the biggest stage in todays football.

Are you telling me Klose or Podolski are better players than Rooney? Surely not. In the last 3 weeks yes, but 3 weeks over 4 years of top level perfomances?

Klose is not a 1st team regular and Podolski has an absolutely dire record at club level since 2006. Thats why i said the are 2nd rate/Reserve.

An aside the last 4 games, i can not see anything to suggest its been anything than a poor standard world cup.

If you think otherwise, why?

Rooney has bottled it on the big stage twice now, 2009/2010 he was looking like a player set to create his own World Cup history but has failed. Until he scores as many goals as Matthew Upson on the big stage, to call him a great player would be a joke

^This that shake it all abaht.

Archibald my dimwitometer reaches unprecedented heights everytime you post. At a rather young 46 I fall somewhat short of the old fogey adjective....suffice to say I was just too young to enjoy the brilliance of the 1970 Brazilians. The 1990 bunch included Bebeto, Careca, Jorginho, Branco and indeed Dunga. They were not vintage by any means but the Brazilains of 2010 have been worse....still they did manage to hang on to beat the mighty North Korea 2-1.

I agree with Tony and Mr A, this tournament has been relatively dull and the general standard of play a bit disappointing.

On the Klose discussion, he's exactly the kind of player that proves that being part of one team and being effective isn't the same as being a better player than X. He's done well for the German side, and performs his role well for them but he's not the greatest player around and so drop him into a lot of other teams and his record wouldn't be half as good.

That's good managment by Klinsmann and Low because they've got the best out of him. It's good play by him as well because he's done his job.

Best World Cup? Too hard to call, they all have their own selling points butI quite enjoyed '94 for some reason.

Best World Cup for me was 2002...off Uni all summer, watched every game....great shocks, hilarious refs, France going out...Italy/Spain being robbed blind...England playing well until 2nd half of all their games.......Anyway...back to S.A 2010

I think it has been an ok WC. It has improved as it has gone on, but we still haven't had that standout match every truly great W.C has. There have been some fantastic goals, but not enough to make a great W.C. The latter stages have been much better than 4 years ago so far, but we need an outstanding Semi-Final like Italy v Germany last time to make this World Cup even better. A decent final would also help.....Italy v France was fun but not classic stuff....well the headbutt action was world class.

It's the one to which I've paid the closest attention of any, for what little I'm certain that such is worth

Better than the last one, which Blather ruined by telling his referees to card absolutely everything from the off...and then, when the sendings-off and bans for accumul7ion mounted up, he ber7ed them, the stupid f*ck

I've been saying pretty much from the off that some of these sides look jaded, and another two weeks' delay before the start of this thing would have done no harm to the overall quality of play IMO (although Spain, where they play on as deep into spring as they can, are right there in the semis --so WTFK really)

There's just no good way to do this, but I suppose that what we've got now is just about the best --a second round-robin stage that would shake down the semifinalists would be closer to my preferred way of doing things, but ain't holding my breath

When the Round of 16 ended and we went two days without matches, it didn't take me long to wonder just what the hell I was going to do with the blocks of time that I'd committed to watching games for the preceding 19 days, and I reckon I'll miss it when it's gone altogether

I don't think it's as bad as some on here are saying. 1994 minus the Bulgarians and Romainians was pretty piss poor.

One thing that has been woeful, far more than in any WC I can remember has been the goalkeeping. Minus the Nigerian keepers first two games and the Dutch keeper, it's been dire and littered with mistakes.

I thought the Portuguese keeper has had a good WC as well.

However, I would point to the ball as being a culprit in the view that the keepers have been poor; when even keepers of the quality of Casillas are spilling shots, then you know there is a problem.

Agreed with this.

And it's not just the keepers.

It's been pointed out before, we've not seen the quality of free kicks or long-range shots that you'd normally see in such a top-class tournament. Not only that though - the number of times we've seen apparently simple balls being overhit or miscontrolled, simple basic errors that you might expect to see occasionally but that have been happening repeatedly, all point to something wrong somewhere. It's unlikely that all these world-class players have suddenly gotten poor overnight, which brings it down the ball or the pitches*. The pitches are presumably all different, so that just leaves the ball.

* - Of course, it could be those bloody horns that are putting all the players off...

I think it was Kammi who named the German keeper in his team of the tournament yesterday, saying he'd made hardly any mistakes. I think he's been pretty poor to be honest, spilling loads and not looking at all convincing.

He has been lucky though, and I can't remember any of his spills and mistakes leading to goals.

He was in no-man's land for Upson's header although tbf he would have expected Boateng to at least have challenged Upson so it was a late attempt to punch the ball away.
As for the tournament as ever there have been some entertaining bits but very little in terms of great skillful moments like Maradona's fantastic run v England or THE move by Brazil back in 1970 or even Archie Gemmil's run.
Germany has been the most fluent side but tonight they will probably have to make as much as they can when they get possession because they could be chasing shadows for large parts of the game.

FWIW apart from the superstars that have had little impact I feel that De Maria of Argentina has looked overawed after a great season in Europe and I can't see what is so special about Cavani whereasVan Bommel and Schneider look as though the best thing they did was to leave Real Madrid as both have blossomed at club and international level.
Unlike others I'm not convinced by Suarez despite his club form and that good curling finish but Schweinsteiger has changed from being an ordinary winger to one of the best midfielders around and he could go on to break records for international caps as he is still only 25.

Noticed that myself, there's a few others too who will bulldoze through 100 caps with ease

Lucas Poldolski, 25 (78 caps, 40 goals)
Bastian Schweinsteiger, 25 (79 caps, 21 goals)
Philip Lahm, 26 (70 caps, 4 goals)
Per Mertesacker, 25 (67 caps, 1 goal)

Rooney has played 64 times for England aged 24, and Messi 49 for Argentina, aged 23, Ronaldo 76 caps for Portugal aged 25.
