Players underachieving because of strengths of Premiership

by Cripple Creek » 17 Jan 2022 08:26

It seems to me that the deluge of quality attacking players currently playing in the Premiership, many of them as is often frequently mentioned are English, means that some phenomenal players will never reach the giddy heights of which they are capable.
I feel sure that in days gone by the likes of Hudson-Odoi, Pulisic, Billy Gilmour (not quite sure what is happening with him right now) would of been shoo ins for any team in the top tier. Now i wonder whether their gifts are going to never be given the chance to be expressed because of the sheer competition.

Pulisic - not English
Hudson-Odoi - started really well, then I think opposing managers worked out how to nullify him a bit and he's not really kicked on since but there's every chance he still could.
Gilmour - not going to get into the Chelsea team ahead of the other midfield options at the moment and made a ridiculous decision to go on load to Norwich. He must look at Gallagher at Palace and wonder why he made the choice he did.

Hubson-Odoi and Gilmour are suffering a bit from coming through the ranks at a top 4 club. If they'd been at a mid-table club they'd have got a lot more match time and given time to adapt to Premier League football. Unless you're exceptional from the off you don't get that luxury at a top 4 club.

Gilmour is a cracking talent, but he needs a club like Newcastle or Villa to get games and develop himself.

Norwich fans really let themselves down recently giving him stick and chanting to get out of their club. It's hard for anyone to look good in such a bad side!

Seems only a short time ago that Deli Ali was to a lot of people, myself included, potentially one of the best midfielders in Europe.
