On the pitch

by Green » 20 May 2022 17:10

Pitch invasions back in the news https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/61518907, with Jurgen Klopp quoted as saying they are "dangerous", and Eddie Howe chiming in saying they could cause a "tragedy".

I think they need to chill out - let the fans let off a bit of steam once a year. They've suffered enough in most cases, and the real hooligans have been priced out in any case.

been a very common part of English football culture for decades. Its more of a football league thing than a top division thing (too many daytrippers I assume) but a couple of idiots behaving like idiots shouldn't mean there needs to be a change imo

Of course it needs to change, people are just way bigger dickheads these days and do things for likes on social media.

Pitch invasions are fine but the safety of the players and staff has to be ensured.

The players are a bunch of primadonnas. Heaven forbid they have to get close to the people paying £40 to watch them kick a ball around once a year

It's gone on for absolute yonks. Because something just happened this week doesn't mean it all needs stopping

I'm sure pitch invasions were handled better than they have been recently. Like cricket and rugby.
For instance in cricket they get loads of stewards to rope off a massive area in front of the pavillion.
Rugby's the same, and I swear on our last pitch invasion (Bradford?) They put a huge wall of stewards in front of the Bradford fans and a wall of Stewards protecting a big area in front of the benches. If the latter had been done surely neither of this week's incidents would have happened.

Nobody has suggested it all needs stopping but it does need proper policing in this day and age. Too many attention seeking psychos about unfortunately. Someone will get killed soon.

Following on from the recent events,

Referees will give the players a 30 second warning
The whistle will blow
Then the Usain Bolt charge to the dressing rooms will ensue.

The numbskulls will pour onto the pitch…just to ‘be as one’ again (then realise that they are actually stood alone with strangers…lol)

The players, by now, are already in their cosy dressing rooms, and will leave by the back door

The thousands of numbskulls on the pitch will look at eachother, raise their hands in victory, then realise that their idols have gone home….then (having grabbed a blade of grass) go home too.

Pitch invasions? lol, there's a rightful time and a place for that….
Nowadays, it”s just a sheep-like thing

Pick your moment….make it count.

As for jostling the opposition teams players (who have invariably lost the game)……their misery and livelihoods are already affected, no need to rub it in

Football is becoming as pathetic as politics

Never in my day

Conveniently forgetting that Billy Sharp could have sustained extremely serious injury and Patrick Viera … oh wait, had that continued the Everton fan would have been hospitalised

How any sane individual could attempt to defend pitch invasions with players of both teams still on the pitch is beyond me.

Yeah this thread is bizarre, a lot of weird comments. I don't think anyone is saying that home supporters shouldn't invade the pitch to celebrate when it is safe to do so but in this current day and age there are far more attention seeking dickheads who are a danger to opposition players and match officials so they need to be protected before any home supporters enter the field of play.

Surely Green is playing devil's advocate here as generally his posts have a modicum of sense unless of course he is wearing his Union Jack hat and his London Pride (isn't that a real ale?) T-shirt.

I don't get it. Pitch invasions have been fine for years. Why are fans suddenly assaulting players?

Post-pandemic bellendry?

I put it down to a combination of society generally being more angry, the average Joe's increased need for attention and the police being too frightened to be hardline in the modern age.

If you have a row of police on each side of the ground with batons out then you don't get a pitch invasion. A line of stewards won't do a thing to negate bellends coming on to the pitch, they are told to not stop invasions and rightly so, they aren't paid enough for that.

No issue with supporters coming on the pitch to celebrate with their own players by the way. What is essential though is to buy enough time for the match officials and away team to get down the tunnel.

I think the media have tried to make a bigger deal of it than happened tbh.

The Forest incident was an absolute disgrace, and the media have taken that and run with it.
