I thought Villa's corners were pretty good today. Precise, in the "corridoor of uncertainty" and caused us problems.

Their 2nd goal came from our corner that hit the 1st man as normal

Schards#2 I have never played above a decent park level, however, I can take a corner that will not hit the first man 999 times out of 1000. Why do our heroes have such difficulty in achieving this? WTF do they do in training?

And another thing, when you're 60 minutes + in and barely had an attempt at goal all day, when you're in space 20 odd yards out HAVE A F**KING SHOT FOR F**KS SAKE
have a punt on the player ratings Shards

Yet again we had stacks of corners and did nothing with them. To not get the ball beyond their first man time and again is abysmal.

Despite our pathetic attempts at corners today, I was slightly pleased to see Ingimarsson bought on for the sole purpose that he's probably our best threat at corners.

The problem is getting corners in this country is viewed as some kind of potential saviour when the reality is very few goals are scored from them. Added to that Villa themselves are the masters of set pieces with decent headers of the ball in the likes of Carew, Mellberg and Laursen.

the thing is, our corners and other set-pieces used to be something of good point for us. How have we gone from there to being so abysmal? Against Bolton, we hit so many terrible low ones that I actually began to suspect that it was some kind of tactic to counter their height advantage.

We did actually manage two decent free kicks today, but from the amount of set-pieces we had, that's no way near enough. It's not that we aren't scoring from them, because as stated above, goals from corners aren't really all that common, it's that we never even get in a position to be able to score from them.

You're not wrong Schards, I found myself shouting something very similar throughout the match.

The "corner" issue is just another sign that what we have got isnt up to it, and due the the inability or not being bothered to bring in new blood means that the shambles we have now is what we have got till the end of the sesaon, JM, Hammond and Coppell have put us in this position and fully deserve all the critisism that is being thrown at them, we are no more than an average Championship side trying to do a job in the Premiership on the cheap, and that aint gonna happen. The "money" thing in the Prem has the management regime running scared, and if the inevitable happens and we go down they really need to decide if we are ever going to, under the present management, push for this league again as we are not grown up enough in top league football to stay there.

The thing with getting corners lately is, I don't think "come on, chance of a shot at goal"......i think..... "Oh no, hope our defence are ready for the counter attack after the ball is easily cleared". It is almost as if they are taking the p*ss, im really struggling to find a reason to why they can't put the ball in a good position in the box.

Other than corners, the deliveries have been ok, saw some decent ones on sunday. And i agree, we should shoot more - even if it does fly off target like Kitsons effort; to score goals we gotta take shots.

There are actually quite a few goals scored from our corners , the ball is headed out by their defender at the front post ,they break straight down the field and within minutes the opposition score.

hence why we should possibly keep our CBs at the back where they should be
leave the attacking creative stuff to those who supposedly make a living from it
might work if the rest of the team werent a bunch of midgetts

Are you a little obsessed by this?

There is nothing wrong with sending up both centre backs when we have a corner. Those we leave at the back are perfectly capable of defending against a counter attack, or at least as capable as our centre backs appear to be recently anyway!

i am a little

it just seems to me that blindly continuing to do so, when teams are clearly prepped and ready for it
just waiting for an opportunity to break after a corner

it may be prudent to only put one of them in the opposition box, or even neither

and i am not confident at all that leaving murts and/or shorey at the back as our only line of defence is a great idea given that neither has any pace or height

i have just lost count of the number of chances the opposition get after our own corners and free kicks, its better not having them at all.

I just don't think we over commit on corners at all. We always have at least two players staying back plus a couple on the edge of the box. That is plenty cover to stop a break away. Any more and we may as well just give the ball back and not bother at all.

Set pieces are one of the few ways we're likely to score these days. We can't not put up our big men in fear on conceeding.
