Kitson12 I love it how papers and websites use the quote as if Madejski was being serious when he said 20million. It was obvious he was joking, only showing how much he means to the club!

wasnt the original quote a comparison with carroll, and him saying if carrolls worth 35m then shane must be worth at least 20m etc?

Fair point, although hasn't Carroll developed quicker in terms of seasons knocking around first teams? And then of course you can add the obligatory £5m - £10m being a potential / full England internation puts on anyone's value. Plus the £1m - £5m being a Premier League player puts on someone's value.

35million
- 5 million for being around 1st teams longer
-5 million for being full england
-5 million for being premiere league player
= 20 million.

Mr Angry The on ly thing that this thread lacks are reams and reams of utterly meaningless statistics; if it had those, it would be the ultimate Team Board thread.....

By all accounts the Carroll fee had nothing to do with him or Newcastle as such, it was just a fixed amount less than Liverpool could get Chelsea to pay for Torres.

It's overpriced for anyone to pay for Carroll himself, even if he is young, English and on the rise but that wasn't really what was going on. It was just a case of selling Torres, replacing him with Carroll and making a certain amount of profit on top. You could almost say that it was Chelsea that paid way over the odds for Carroll....
