Schards#2 Weren't they shafted by foreign owners rather than shambolic on pitch performance? The Bhatti brothers IIRC

Opinion was that they deliberately ran the club down to try and get it to fold, in the hope that they'd then be able to develop the site.

The problems really started with the building of that new stand. Its costs overran to something like £2 million, which seems almost nothing today, but was around three years' worth of gate money back then. Football was littered with clubs ruined by one expensive stand back then. With no administration escape route to fall back on, the fall could be pretty hard.

What a terrific terrace behind the goal there. I'd rather have supported football clubs 30 years ago compared to today. I reallt don't like much about football anymore.

Also known as the South Bank, iirc.

there is a definite hint of rose-tinted specs about old style football.

Travelling away with Reading in the 80s, while there were some great away ends, all too often the away end was the worst part of the ground, with no roof, an awful view through a high fence, and you'd get soaked and frozen in the winter.

Football is much better and much worse than it was old-style.

It's much better because it's quicker, more skilful, more athletic
It's much worse because there are far more cheats in EVERY team, it's no longer a contact sport and money does buy everything at the top level

I remember going to Walsall and noticing the away end roof wasn't attached to the roof beams, and lifted up when the wind blew. The supporting bolt, seen laying on the terrace floor below, prompted a move to a different part of the ground.

you're lucky

when I went, there wasn't an away end roof

It was cold wet and breezy, and we lost 6-0

Add to that:
Being threatened in vertually evey place you went to.
The lack of the M25.
knowing virtually everyone by first name in the away end.
Being recognised by the players and jibbing away tickets for most games.

Was a real badge of honour in the 80's to go away. I'm glad my time was then and not now.

This seems like the best place to put this..

1 Wolves fan steaming into a crowd of Wigan and sending the majority on their toes..

Steaming into a crowd on your own and coming out of hospital to video evidence >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Running away from a crowd being attacked by 1 bloke and having video evidence

From my trips to Wallsal wasn't there a covered bit of terracing you could stand under? It covered about a quater of the side terracing where away fans could stand? I remember this as a rare luxury as nearly all grounds has open terracing for away ends.
