semtex1871 It really can't be a coincidence that we started playing so well after we offloaded him and brought in roberts and Alfie.............

Semtex drops a bombshell.

Long played one game for us last season and we spent the next 2 months building a new team style.

In he previous season his goals singlehandedly got us into the play offs.

Indeed. Roberts will become a bit-part player next season. A super sub I expect. Whether Long returns or not, Roberts certainly won't be our main striker.

Stranded 8 goals whilst nursing a back injury he has only just fully got over is not a bad return.

And his heart scare - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/footba ... scare.html

Aye, not forgetting that. Long's not shown his potential this year because of his health, but he's still looked electric on the ball. We need him more than Siggs if we go at games with the same mentality next year as we did this.

I appreciate that, but it's his health, not somebody else's. It comes with him.

Fair point, but i still think he's worth signing, because in all likelihood a time will come when he is back to something resembling healthy again. When that happens I think we'd be quids in. If we had gone up last season he'd have definitely been good enough for us, and now he's got prem experience. He's got to be worth a crack.

I think it is important not to get too carried away with something that isn't going to happen in Gylfi signing for us.

Rodgers may want to sign him at Liverpool. Should that not be the case, don't forget he's actually already agreed terms with Swansea.

Then the Hoffenheim manager that bought Gylfi is now joining West Brom so expect a bid from them.

Our chances are so very slim but IF this rumour of us bidding is true then I'd be more than surprised to see us sign him.

RoyalX I wouldn't be disappointed if we signed Long, just a bit underwhelmed.

It's a bit strange to have all this investment to get back where we were a season or two ago

This. Cannot see how re-signing a player whose main contribution to a game is his diving.

It really can't be a coincidence that we started playing so well after we offloaded him and brought in roberts and Alfie.......not a forward move to re-sign old players.......

eh?

what?

So long Shane Long.....great championship player but not good enough to lead Readings attack in the premiership.

Really, really hope he is not coming back.......

Rodgers apparently told Gylfi to sign for Swansea, but if you don't then I want you at Liverpool...

Thats a shockingly poor attempt to appease the Swansea fans. Easy decision to choose Liverpool.

Readings offer is another sign of intent, even it it was hopeful, but they do help change people's perception of the club, and that in turn helps bring bigger names to the club... File Defoe under the came category. We've offered a season long loan, but realistically it isn't going to happen - or it's certainly very unlikely. But another sign of intent.

So basically we will say all these top quality players names but not sign any of them but it's ok as the sign of intent is there

We're gonna end up with a load of freebies aren't we

Then get relegated.

Ahhh... the old "token meaningless bid to appease the fans" argument is rearing its head nice and early I see.

If we're in for the kind of players Liverpool want, then we're going to get disappointed more often than not, but it's better than not being in for those players.

So where does the Hoffenheim Director of Communications comment late last week come in where he said that no deal had beean agreed for Sigurdsson and that he was expected back for pre-season training with Hoffenheim. Someone somewhere is telling porkies.

Anyway I expect Gylfi to move to Liverpool now.....

I'd rather not know though unless we pull it off - we could say we are in for anyone but we need to be realistic and not just say "yeah we have money now so we'll have him"

Didn't he just state that no contracts had been signed with anyone, essentially that Swansea announcing the deal was very premature at best. I also expect Gylfi to go to Liverpool.

As I suggested months ago on the General Football thread (and roundly ridiculed by our resident Man Utd WUM and self-proclaimed font of all knowledge on the Premier League) Gylfi would be the perfect future replacement for Gerrard at Liverpool.

IF no actual contracts have been signed with Swansea, then I fully expect him to be a Liverpool player this Summer; after all, it wouldn't be the first time that a player was supposedly on his way to one club, then ended up at another.

That's harsh, but we also have to be realistic when we're setting our sights so high. The intent is genuine, the money is there to support Brian, but there will always be competition for these type of players. The fact that we're trying to get the likes of Sigurdsson, Cole and Defoe is very exciting, whether we get them or not. It certainly beats being linked with the Sam Sodje's of the world.

so essentially you are moaning at the club for not signing the players they've never said they were trying to sign?

Indeed. And if Gazza is right (as he usually is) we are about to tie up the signing of a guy who we're competing with teams like Udinese, Sporting Lisbon, and Genoa for.

We won't be able to sign every player we bid for, we're not that attractive a club (yet), but it's good to see that the intentions and ambitions are there.
