cmonurz Agree with the sentiment of your post, but we need to be realistic about potential targets – if we signed Arshavin (which I doubt we will) he wouldn’t ‘just about’ fit for our side. The guy has played 100 times in the Premier League for Arsenal, scoring 20-odd goals, and has been capped 75 times by Russia. He would immediately become the most talented player in our squad, by some distance, and we would/should look to build our team around him.

If we’re not going to do that with players of that sort of talent, we may as well not bother signing them.

I have no doubt about him being the most talented player in our team by a country mile and fitting into our squad. However Arshavin has been known to have games where he just doesn't look interested at all. We need players who are going to fight for us right to the end of the season.

Interested what sort of contracts we are offering at this stage – someone like Rogic you can imagine being quite happy to play in the Championship next season should we go down. But Carrico, the Sporting Lisbon captain, and Sunzu, coveted by Arsenal and an ACN winner?

off topic, but this sits uneasy with me:

2nd January 2013 - Wigan Athletic sign Manchester United striker Angelo Henriquez

remind me what happened on the 1st January 2013?

Isn't Arshavin reportedly on £100k a week? The loan could cost as much as £2.5m, just in wages. Big risk, considering he hasn't played well for Arsenal consistently for some time.

Having said that, he's probably the best we could realistically get, so we may as well go for it. If we could bring in him and Huddlestone on loan deals before the end of January, then along with the signing of Carrico, I think that would be a very successful window. Is that unrealistic?

United registered him, having had issues doing so when they signed him in August?

A whole new central midfield?

I don't think there is really room for Carrico and Huddlestone, a midfield three of Carrico-Guthrie-Huddlestone is very conservative. It would keep possession well, but wouldn't support Pogrebnyak very well. Carrico-Huddlestone-Arshavin would be better at that, but possibly too weak defensively and would need three players who have never played for this club to start performing well together.

Carrico, Sunzu and Rogic.

Happy with those, and with another 1 or 2 additions it could have the makings of a very good squad. Not enough to stay up this year but definitely in a position to come back up and develop into an established Prem side in a few years.

Permanents of Carrico, Sunzu and Rogic with the added get out of jail free card of Huddlestone, Arshavin and Chersychev. Would be very happy with that

Maybe a new whole central midfield but in all honesty with the exception of Jem and Guthrie it is clear that Mikele and Tabby do not have enough quality to merit regular appearances in a Reading side competing in the PL. If you think about the system we have been deploying recentley we could actually be doing with a couple of more centre midfielders in the liklehood someone is going to get suspended or injured at some point later on in the season. We will most likely be wanting to pack the midfield against the likes of city, united and Arsenal assuming we will be fighting for our PL lives at this stage of the season. It may not be that bad a move to make its just how do you keep everyone happy.

True, but do you think that Carrico will get a start anytime soon? If he does then fair enough, but he's only played a couple of times this season. Seems a bit of a gamble. I was making assumptions that Carrico wouldn't play too much of a part for the next couple of months.

I'd love Clayton. I imagine most here would grumble at some of these coming in, but I'd be happier with a couple of these than the likes of the Arshavin and Cole's.

Max Clayton - Crewe - Striker - £3m - United and Arsenal watching closely
Will Hughes -17 - Derby - Midfielder - £? - Spurs, Arsenal, Liverpool and Barca all shown interest
Liam Moore - 19 - Leicester - Defender - £? - United interested last summer
Harry Maguire - 19 - Sheffield United - Defender - £? -
George Long - 19 - Sheffield United - Keeper - £? - United watching
Charlie Austin - 23 - Burnley - Striker - £5m? - Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle, Reading and Aston Villa rumoured keen
Jack Butland - 19 - Birmingham - Keeper - £6m - Various top flight club watching
Jamaal Lascelles - 19 - Forest - Defender - £? - Various top flight club watching

Would be happy with most of these but we don't need a keeper.
Will Hughes looks like he is a going to be a serious player!

Scott Sinclair on loan, surely worth a chat with Citeh, would be an ideal addition to give us that creativity we lack
