We have possibly the sh*ttest set of fans in the country

Every 30 minutes : 'clap clap blarmy, clap clap blarmy....' fades out pitifully.

People need to learn to take their portion of the blame

Who is guilty?

by paddy20 » 16 Mar 2013 10:42

It seems indisputable that if you get promoted to the premiership you have to invest in players and wages accordingly. 20000 Reading fans know you have to spend a minimum of £20m plus to even compete. Frankly you have to be a bit of an idiot if you don't realise this. So who is the guilty party that has brought us once again to this position?

It seems we have four possible candidates:

1. Brian MacD Was he too close to the players and felt unable to take the hard decision of letting go some of the championship team in the vague hope that he could buck the trend and fighting spirit would prove more valuable than breaking up the team and bringing in better players who may not have the same commitment. After all thats what he had done successfully in the championship- won it with less quality players than other teams.

2. Anton. Did he decide that he would only make limited funds available (i.e.£5-8m) despite the fact that he had already spent millions on the club and had a treasure chest on the horizon if he could survive the first season

3. Hammond. Did he persuade Anton that instead of paying out large transfer fees we could carry on unearthing hidden gems

4. Madjeski. Did he take the young Anton under his wing and persuade him the Reading way was the right way. As he still owned 49% of the shares would any new investment in players (assets) not also have to be met by him?

I have one stand out guilty party but would be interested to see what others think

It's the sheer idiocy of saying things like, "obviously we should have spent £25 million to compete," with no idea if the business could afford this level of spending. The sheer detachment from economic reality and the uninformed anger from some supporters that we haven't simply spent money.

You need to get around other grounds more as a neutral. It's the same almost everywhere.

TBM Didn't someone on here say that they'd heard McD had not seen Carrico play (ergo it wasn't him who signed him ) and that's why he wouldn't play him?

Firstly, where is McDermott supposed to have watched him, seeing he'd barely played a competitive game for half a season or more? Secondly McDermott did play him. He then dropped him after 45 minutes because fitness was obviously a big issue.

So that just sounds like someone's made up conspiracy theory to me.

Irrespective of my highlighted point, if you sign a player - don't you watch them in training and know whether they are up to playing or not? And when you've played them half a game and realise they're not fit - how bloody long does it take for them to come to full fitness and why waste your money on such a player in the first place? Were we safely mid-table, I could understand taking a punt on Carrico, for next season - but for THIS season? Complete waste of money and whoever did actually decide to sign him, has made an epic fail imo.

The reason we've been so poor this season is down to Brian McDermott & the players overachieving last season.... so it's their fault for doing so well.

Agree. I've been to so many away games and we certainly do have one of the worst home fans in the country, almost as bad as Fulham. I really dislike watching home games due to the lack of atmosphere from the home fans. Ssssshhhhhhhh..
