Which team have we had the most memorable matches against?

by Clyde1998 » 10 Oct 2025 19:58

Just a thought I had: which team have we had the most amount of memorable matches against?

Of course, different people will have different interpretations of 'memorable' - and certain matches may only be memorable for personal reasons.

My first thought has to be West Ham: the 9/11 penalty-shootout; the two Mad Stad games when they had Pardew; the 6-0 in the Premier League; the 3-0 with Kebe's sock antics; the 4-2 at Upton Park. Given we haven't played them that often, I'd think they're the highest proportion of memorable matches compared to total matches against them.

Sheffield United for me. The matches between 2002-2007 were box office stuff.

‘Tips hat’ to the Wet Sham and Sheff U coming togethers.

For me Derby feature quite highly (for good and bad reasons) that away game when we “weren’t worthy” of playing on their hallowed ground…..the 2006 5-0 pummelling we gave them pre-champion confirmation celebrations….another thrashing dished out one evening with Robbie Savage having to go in goal etc etc.

Sheff Weds, Blackpool and Pompey have provided us with some fun too.

Yes the one where their sub was almost immediately sent off still amuses me.

Our record against them matches our wider fortunes. When we were good, we beat them all the time. Then in 2017, after a few seasons apart, they started beating us consistently and we've been shit ever since.

Memorable, but for completely the wrong reason would be Arsenal, can we just play them once without losing please?
4-0 up we lost and Feds letting a simple shot go under him were the nearest we`ve come.
Not likely to be playing them in the foreseeable future though unless it`s in the cup.

Smashed them in the FA cup, signed Nick Blackman the next week and lived the curse ever since.

Decent shout.

Remember the 4-0 defeat in the first Premier League season as that was the most outclassed we were in any Premier League game under Coppell, IIRC.

We also took our largest ever away following (excluding finals) to Highbury in the 2005-06 season (to my knowledge) - roughly 7,200.

Seem to recall a mass brawl on the bench and Ulises de la Cruz running the length of the pitch to score in that game.

Wolves must be the mid-90s equivalent Every home game from 94/95 to the league cup win in 97/98 fits the bill here.

West Ham immediately sprang to mind, as we so often seemed to memorably beat them. Those games in 11/12 had everything.

Sheff U as well, it felt for a few years that we were the best teams outside the Prem and every time we met it was a bit of a blockbuster.

It all seemed to start when Mackie racially abused Asaba in that December 02 fixture and ever since then we just played some really good matches with them in that period and in most cases us coming out on top. I remember the 3-1 win at Bramall Lane on Valentine's Day in 2003 when they had been a very good team at home that season and it was one of the best team performances in my time following. Obviously we had the 2 matches in 05/06 where Kenny should have been sent off in the first fixture only for us to win 2-1 with Gunnarsson's late header. The return match Kitson missed the penalty when we drew 1-1 and as mentioned the year after with Gillespie getting sent off seconds after coming on.

Wolves - 2-2 in the 14th game, 4-2 first game after Mcghee, 2-1 Lovell, Play off semi, and there was a high scoring draw more recently

4 individual games that stand out for me on a personal level:

Reading 4 - Plymouth 3 (1985??); 3 goals down and we come back to win 4-3; 40 years on and it still gives me goosebumps!

Reading 2 Wigan 1 (2001 Play Off Semi Final, 2nd Leg); it wasn't just the significance of the game, or the manner in which Fozzy won it for us, but more that it was the first time that The Mad Stad felt like it was our home since the move from Elm Park, with the fans making noise that was almost physical.

Reading 3 Middlesborough 2 (Aug 2006): something I thought I would never live to see - Reading playing top flight football; hell of a game as well! (and the game Coppell at a Fans Forum said was his favorite of that season!!)

Reading 6 West Ham 0 (Jan 1 2007). I thought that we would get a few wins in the Premier League, but I never expected that we would humiliate a team in the top flight.......with hindsight it was a game that hinted at what might have been.

I'll agree with those who've suggested Wolves. From the mid-90s for about a decade nearly every game against them was outstanding and dramatic - and usually a win for us.

I'm thinking of Archie's late winner at Elm Park, Bodin-gate, Parky scoring from 40 yards, Adie Williams's own goal, that play-off semi at Molineux, Paul Brayson hitting the post there - and relentless barracking of Mark McGhee.

Absolutely this. Gunnarsson's brace against them is in my top three Reading moments. Always big games, lost of drama, great atmosphere.

The Blades' fans arrogance made beating them just about the best thing ever in football. Little old Reading eh? It all started when we had the impertinence to beat them on their patch. And it just got more intense thereafter.

I'd love anything like that sort of excitement again.
