West F andrew1957 andrew1957 Selles wouldn't have been my choice, but to be fair he has done better than I expected so far considering the hand he was dealt (I wasn't expecting much!).
He was appointed late, most of the players we brought in haven't been here 5 minutes and so there was no proper pre -season. We have seen one of the largest turn rounds of players at the end of a season I can ever recall and brought in largely unproven youngsters. Let alone all the financial issues and a points deduction. And he has had injuries to key players like Smith plus we seem to have been unlucky to play mainly in form teams so far.
Seriously folks anyone who expects us to be at the top end of the division by the end this season is deluded. If Selles can bring us to a solid mid table finish (say anywhere between 10-17th) then I would say he has had a good start and provided the owner keeps funding the club, we should have a great chance of going up next season, as the young players who "make it" this season will have a good season's experience behind them and hopefully we can fill any obvious gaps next summer.
I like seeing the young players develop and think we need to be super patient with them as they get experience. So far the defence have been good - only conceding 5 in 6 games and so our problems have been that we are not scoring enough goals - but the team are creating chances and so I do expect this to change as the season progresses.
Although I do say it myself my post from September 2023 was pretty accurate. The shame is we are now pretty much back to where we were 2 years ago with yet another new squad, having seen the young players like Bindon and Mbengue develop and then move on.
I would say on balance, on the money rather than pretty accurate. What do the runes say now? Oracle of future yet to come.
I reckon we are exactly where we were 2 years ago. When you bring a lot of new players in at one time it takes 15 or so games to really get them going and working as a team - as happened with Selles 2 years ago. We lost 11 of the first 16 that season, but then did ok for the last 30 games. Most on this thread wanted Selles gone and if the club had not been in crisis, I am sure he would have been sacked and we might even have been relegated under a new boss, but as it happens he was given time to turn it round. It doesn't matter who the manager is - it takes time.
But fans are so fickle they expect a manager to work wonders after about 4 weeks. If we lose 11 of the first 16 this time, the pressure from fans will be immense and I fear Hunt will be a goner. If that happens then frankly we deserve to be relegated.
The truth is the club were unable to build on last season and we have lost Bindon, Mbengue, Smith, Knibbs, Campbell and Wareham - that is 5 (counting Smith and Wareham as one) from our starting 11 last time. That is a huge hole to fill and it will most likely take a good deal of this season to get the new players up to scratch. To me this season is just a case of not being relegated and then go again next time as I doubt we will challenge for top 6 or even close to it. This is also why I don't like too many inward loans, because if the loan players become a key part of the squad and you lose them at the end of the season, you are yet again back to square one the following season. One or two loans are ok, but not more than that.
